NSCAD University students are utilizing their design skills to assist the residents of Northwood, a continued care facility in Halifax. This project, which was announced in November, is evaluating the SMART technology used by the residents to identify and address accessibility barriers.

Dr. Gary Thompson, College of the North Atlantic’s Director of Innovation and the geoscientist who was featured in our recent Industry Research Collaboration video series, was named Geoscientist of the Year by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum its annual conference in St. John’s.

The folks at the University of New Brunswick released an innovation ecosystem map, which was produced in partnership with Global Advantage Consulting Group. The study showed that New Brunswick’s share of Canadian GDP had fallen from 1.7 percent in 2013 to 1.64 in 2017 and concluded that the province needs more innovation.

And X-Terra Resources Inc, precious resources exploration and acquiring company, entered a strategic partnership with the University of New Brunswick’s Research Chair in Economic Geology, Dr. David Lentz to do R&D for the company.

Tuma Young, Dr. Claudette Taylor, Dr. Matthias Bierenstiel and Dr. Audrey Walsh are part of a new research group at Cape Breton University studying Maskwiomin, a traditional medicine made from the oil of birch bark and is used to treat skin conditions such as rashes, eczema and psoriasis. The researchers received a $850,000 grant to develop this traditional Mi’kmaw medicine for potential future commercial production as a skin ointment.

Memorial University is “expanding focus” with its new Lab2Market Oceans Program. Lab2Market is a team-based, experiential learning and lean methodology-driven program focused on training PhDs and post-doctoral scholars to become the next corporate innovators.

A chemistry professor at St. Francis Xavier University has found a way to freeze lobster for preservation, without compromising taste. Dr. Shah Razul used high-tech computer simulations to determine the best “ingredients” (a combination of biomolecules) to freeze the lobster.

And in January, St.FX signed a memorandum of understanding with Maritime Launch Services (MLS). The company has proposed to construct and operate a private commercial space launch site for launching satellites into low Earth orbit and establish a commercially-controlled, commercially-managed launch site that would provide options in North America.
