St John’s Makes A Perfect Pitch101

18 students and early stage entrepreneurs honed their pitching skills as the Pitch101 series hit Memorial University last week

Pitch101 is a series of half day events hosted across Atlantic Canada by post-secondary institutions that provide young entrepreneurs and students the opportunity to develop a clear and concise “pitch”.

Day 1 of the event included a grooming session with Invest Atlantic founder, Bob Williamson. This portion of the program gave participants the opportunity to refine their pitching skills and orchestrate a 60-second pitch based on their business idea.

Day 2 began with a one-hour “fireside discussion” among audience members and special guests on subjects of particular interest to the industry sectors on hand.  The chat was followed by the competition where the pitchers presented their pitch.  Judges had five minutes to ask questions and then give their critique. The audience was able to text their votes at the end of the competition.

Chris Mathis and Karen Donnelly of Springboard Atlantic had the opportunity to be involved in last week’s event in St. John’s. Both were highly impressed at the calibre of “pitchers” and in the improvement of their pitches between the grooming session and the competition.

“It’s very interesting to see how well-developed the start-up community is in St John’s. Obviously the stakeholders support the nurturing of start-ups and their ideas,” said Bob Williamson, host of the Pitch101 series. “Noting the winners of Invest Atlantic’s annual Pitch Camp pitching competition for the past three years have been from St John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, it makes me wonder what they are doing differently within their start up community. Whatever it is, keep it up!”

”The session was excellent!” said participant, Tendai Mudunge of MUN. “The review from the judges was good. I think my idea has potential and from discussions with my colleagues there is plenty of interest. I will keep working on it.”

Overall, a great success. If you are looking to be part of a Pitch 101 session check out the website www.pitch101.ca
