UPEI Receives More Than $600,000 To Study Addictions

The Centre for Health and Biotech Management Research at UPEI has been awarded more than $600,000 from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to study its online treatment program for addictions.

The program, called CBT4CBT, allows round-the-clock online access to cognitive behavioural therapy for addictions to complement traditional treatment, including counselling.

During its trials in P.E.I., it has been praised by patients and therapy personnel for its efficacy, cost savings and its accessibility to patients in rural areas 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“UPEI is proud to be a part of the project and we look forward to further development of this approach as it gains traction on P.E.I. and in rural communities across Canada,” said Robert Gilmour, UPEI’s vice-president of research and graduate studies.

The project is a joint effort by Juergen Krause, director of the centre at UPEI, and Kathleen Carroll of Yale Medical School.

“The funds obtained will provide us the unique opportunity to be the entry portal for this new addictions treatment approach to Canada and to develop it in collaboration with our partners in PEI and New Brunswick,” said Krause.

The Centre for Health and Biotech Management plans to expand CBT4CBT to more Canadian provinces and territories after more study.
